AUSTIN, Texas - Companies putting out an S.O.S. for new, corporate talent in a tightening labor-market are getting a surprising response: M.O.M.
That's the message from Shonna Cooper, founder and CEO of Work-Life Initiative LLC, a newly launched diversity recruiting-firm that matches career-focused moms with family-friendly/work-life employers.
"Companies are looking for diversity and they value loyalty and stability," Cooper said. "The women we work with have strong, professional credentials and a powerful desire to stay on a career path. They're interested in permanent employment with businesses that allow them the flexibility to balance their lives. In turn, they give their employers higher productivity and greater job-longevity."
She said working mothers who need flexibility often find only temporary, seasonal or niche jobs that provide no career track. Technology and a changing workplace are opening the door to permanent employment options, a scenario Cooper sees as win-win.
"In a work-balance environment, women really can have it all. Equally as important, companies can have it all, and by that I mean better recruitment, lower costs, higher productivity, improved retention and happier employees. When you empower people in a more adaptive work-atmosphere, both sides reap the benefits."
That attraction has helped make the family-friendly workplace one of the nation's hottest employment trends. Still, Cooper admits creating the right work-balance environment is an artful dance—an area where she is uniquely qualified to offer advice. A former professional ballet-dancer in New York City, she leaped into the corporate world over a decade ago to work in business development and recruiting.
It wasn't until the birth of her daughter that she began exploring work-life balance as a potential career.
"As a new mother, I had a lot of questions," she said. "I thought there had to be a better choice than leaving your baby or losing your career and I was fortunate to find that many companies agreed with me. There really are solutions without sacrifices."
She views her firm as a partner to those companies, getting to know their organization and identifying work-balance aspects that appeal to career moms. If a business wants to improve its work-life profile, her company can provide direction on telecommuting, flex-time options, day-care assistance, paid maternity and other solutions tailored to a client's individual needs.
"We're not about cookie-cutter placement, we're about making a high-level match between our client and a job candidate," Cooper said. "Every company has a different situation and we're committed to finding qualified, motivated women suited to the work-life environment that company provides."
Work-Life Initiative, LLC is a national recruiting firm providing job-posting, candidate screening, interviewing, in-depth qualifying, resume management, reference verification and scheduling. The company is based in Austin, Texas.
